Who Should Consider an STI Blood Test?

New sexual partners

Testing before or after a new sexual relationship gives peace of mind and protects both partners.

Regular screening

Sexually active adults with multiple partners should consider screening every 3-12 months, even without symptoms.

Potential exposure

If you have had unprotected sex or suspect exposure to an STI, blood testing can detect infections that may not cause obvious symptoms.

Pre-travel or pre-procedure

Some medical procedures, IVF treatments, or visa applications require proof of negative STI results.

Note the approximate date of potential exposure, as your doctor may advise retesting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which STIs can be detected with a blood test?

Blood tests can detect HIV (types 1 and 2), syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Other STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea are typically detected through urine or swab samples rather than blood. A comprehensive sexual health screen may combine blood and non-blood tests.

Is a home STI blood test confidential?

Completely. Your phlebotomist is bound by professional confidentiality. Results are sent only to you or your requesting clinician. The Lola Dispatch booking system does not share your test details with anyone else. No information appears on any shared medical records unless you choose to share it with your GP.

How soon after exposure can an STI blood test detect an infection?

This varies by infection. HIV can be reliably detected 45 days after exposure with a 4th generation test (some tests detect earlier). Syphilis can be detected 3-6 weeks after exposure. Hepatitis B surface antigen appears 1-9 weeks after exposure. Hepatitis C antibodies appear 4-10 weeks after exposure. Testing too early can produce a false negative.

Do I need to fast before an STI blood test?

No. STI blood tests do not require fasting. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment.

How long do STI blood test results take?

Most STI blood test results are available within two to five working days. HIV and syphilis results are often faster (one to three days). Hepatitis results may take slightly longer depending on the laboratory.
