Phlebotomy is often seen as an entry-level role, but it has a progression path of its own and is a good starting point for other healthcare careers.

• Trainee phlebotomist — working under supervision while completing practical competency assessments.
• Phlebotomist — working independently across patient groups in clinics, surgeries or wards.
• Senior phlebotomist — training and assessing new staff, quality audits, stock, difficult venous access and service improvement. Not every employer has these posts.
• Team lead or service coordinator — leading a team, managing rotas and coordinating across sites.
• Service manager — budgeting, workforce planning, policy and governance, usually with management training or a relevant degree.

Moves Into Other Roles

• Healthcare management — running a phlebotomy service is good operational experience.
• Teaching and training — experienced phlebotomists can become clinical educators.

• Children — taking blood from children and babies needs extra training and a particular temperament.
• Difficult venous access — for example, patients with lines or ports.
• Workplace health — blood draws at workplaces and events.
• Timed and specialist samples — for clinics that need time-sensitive collection.

Whichever direction you choose, keep a portfolio of courses, reflective notes and evidence of competency. It supports applications for promotion and shows professionalism.
