Temperature control for samples
Keeping blood samples within the laboratory’s temperature and time requirements.
Why it matters
Heat, cold and delay can change results or make a sample unusable. Each test has its own requirements.
Know the requirements
The receiving laboratory’s handbook sets the temperature and time limits for each test. Some samples need special handling, such as being kept cold or delivered quickly. Check before you collect.
Equipment
Use an insulated transport box and a way of checking its temperature. Do not let samples touch ice packs directly, and never leave samples in a hot or cold car.
Records
Record when samples were collected and handed over. If the laboratory reports rejected samples, look for patterns and fix the cause.
