Butterfly needles
When a winged blood collection set helps, and how to use one well.
What they are
A butterfly, or winged collection set, is a short needle with flexible wings and a length of tubing that connects to a tube holder or syringe. The tubing lets you change tubes without moving the needle.
When to use one
Small or fragile veins, children, hand and forearm veins, patients likely to move, and any draw where a shallow angle helps.
Reducing haemolysis
Very fine needles increase the risk of haemolysis. Use the largest gauge that suits the vein and let blood flow steadily rather than forcing it.
Blood cultures and coagulation tubes
Air in the tubing enters the first container filled. Follow local guidance on which blood culture bottle to fill first and on whether a discard tube is needed before a coagulation sample.
