What cannulation is
Cannulation is inserting a thin flexible tube, a cannula, into a vein and leaving it in place so fluids or medicines can be given. Venepuncture takes blood; cannulation provides ongoing access to a vein.
How it relates to phlebotomy
Cannulation builds on the same knowledge of venous anatomy, aseptic technique and patient communication. Cannulation courses usually expect venepuncture competence first.
Before you enrol
Your employer decides whether you may cannulate in your role. Ask them what training and assessment they accept.
