What venepuncture involves, how competence is usually assessed, and how it is maintained.
What venepuncture is
Venepuncture is puncturing a vein with a needle, most often to collect blood for laboratory testing. It involves identifying the patient, checking consent, selecting a vein, preparing the site, collecting into the right tubes in the right order, labelling and disposing of sharps safely.
How competence is assessed
Assessment usually combines a test of knowledge with direct observation of the procedure on real patients by a qualified assessor, repeated until the assessor is satisfied the practitioner is consistently safe.
Keeping competence up to date
Employers usually expect regular practice and periodic review. After a long break from taking blood, expect a period of supervised practice before working alone again. Keep a record of your training and assessments.
Venepuncture and phlebotomy
The terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, venepuncture is the act of puncturing a vein; phlebotomy is the practice of taking blood samples.
